COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vermont orchards are raising money to help Jamaican workers repair damage from Hurricane Melissa, which last week destroyed homes and roads on their island. Local farms have raised over $66,000 for about 190 workers who have been key to the apple harvest — showing strong community support.  Seven Days
  • During the 15th annual Charity Sale on October 18th, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel and its customers raised $24,234 for the Vermont Foodbank and JCEO Plattsburgh Foodshelf — increasing total donations to over $313,000 over the years — to support hunger relief in the region.  VermontBiz
  • The Housing and Homelessness Alliance of Vermont will name Michael Redmond as Interim Executive Director beginning November 17—he brings years of nonprofit experience from Upper Valley Haven and will lead the organization after Frank Knaack will step down on November 7.  VermontBiz

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vermont will host the American Dairy XPO at the Champlain Valley Expo Center in Essex Junction on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—more than 200 dairy producers from New York, Pennsylvania and Canada are set to attend the event which will feature education sessions, innovative tools and an award ceremony for Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year with tickets available online and at the door.  NBC5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Warren Zevon (famed for 'Werewolves of London') will be posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Los Angeles on Nov. 8 as talk show host David Letterman leads the ceremony; his daughter (Ariel from Peacham) and former wife from Vermont will attend to honor his lasting influence on rock music. Family members say the honor confirms his impact on major artists and keeps his legacy alive.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UVM students documented leaks, mold and pests in their dorms and formed a tenant union to demand that the university meet the city’s housing code. Councilor Marek Broderick will introduce a resolution later this month to have UVM and city officials review the housing inspection process and enforce needed repairs.  Seven Days
  • VSAC received a $31 million federal GEAR UP grant that will provide college and career guidance to over 2,200 middle and high school students and 200 first-year college students—this seven-year funding supports modest-income and first-generation students in rural and underserved parts of Vermont. The program will offer one-on-one counseling, school-based initiatives, and family engagement to help close opportunity gaps.  VermontBiz

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Energy Action Network released a report on energy affordability that shows Vermont households spent over $7,000 on energy in 2024, with high fossil fuel costs driving most expenses—particularly in transportation and heating. The report says switching to efficient technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pump systems may lower bills, but upfront costs keep many from making the change.  VermontBiz

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Vermont will soon expand the Kids-A-Part Parenting Program to include incarcerated fathers at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. The program, run by Lund since 2011 for incarcerated mothers, will cost an additional $240,000 per year and is mandated by state legislation — it aims to strengthen bonds between fathers and their children.  Vermont Public
  • Vermont housing authorities reported a federal funding shortfall for Section 8 vouchers and asked lawmakers for state help—seeking an $18 million investment to cover gaps for 1,233 vouchers in December to prevent cuts that could worsen housing hardships. Lawmakers are expected to review the request when the Legislature reconvenes in January.  VTDigger
  • The state-funded partial SNAP benefit, known as 3SquaresVT, will be issued on Friday, November 7 for over 38,000 households as the Vermont Department for Children and Families reviews new federal guidance following recent court rulings (payments will go to EBT cards or direct deposit). Governor Scott and legislative leaders also allocated $250,000 to the Vermont Foodbank to help support local food shelves.  VermontBiz

  • Donors and hospital staff gathered Tuesday to mark the completion of a major NICU renovation at Golisano Children's Hospital at UVM Health+ the update creates private rooms and a brighter, secure entrance to improve care for the hundreds of infants served each year.  VermontBiz
  • Vermont Health Connect began Open Enrollment on November 1 for Vermonters to sign up for 2026 health and dental plans. Those who enroll by December 15 will have coverage starting on January 1 — those who enroll later will see coverage begin on February 1 as enrollment closes on January 15.  VermontBiz
