Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 10th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An 8-year-old Burlington boy helped change a small library into a free food pantry when his family filled part of a red shed with nonperishable food to help neighbors affected by SNAP cuts—neighbors quickly supported the effort by sending emails and donations to restock the pantry. The idea, posted on Front Porch Forum, sparked a strong community response as families shared in the spirit of generosity.  NBC5
  • VTDigger leaders have asked Vermont readers to donate during the approaching Year End Drive, stressing that contributions are essential to keep independent journalism free for all. With less than 2% of readers supporting the organization so far, each gift funds daily reporting that holds public officials accountable — keeping residents informed.  VTDigger
  • The Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing now offers free farm and event listings on VermontVacation.com (the state’s largest searchable tourism database with over 180,000 unique users) to help farms attract more visitors. NOFA-VT is extending Crop Cash PLUS in November for shoppers at farmers markets, VEDA will open a Disaster Recovery Loan Fund for drought-impacted operations, and the Caledonia Conservation District will host a community dinner on November 12 in Lyndonville.  VermontBiz

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vermont-born sculptor Emily Bedard from Milton designed large stone panels for a Desert Shield and Desert Storm memorial that will be built on the National Mall. The under-construction memorial has a dedication planned for 2026—full details will be released in mid-January.  NBC5
  • The Green Box: At the Heart of War, a documentary about a bomber pilot's life and World War II's lasting effects, is airing nationwide on PBS from November 2 to 18. It is produced by Holly Stadtler and based on Jim Kurtz's memoir—featuring an interview with a Vermont doctor.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Vermont Italian Cultural Association is accepting applications for a grant program that offers up to $1,500 in funding to three people exploring Italian culture — including its language, arts, music, and history. The program, funded by donations and membership dues, will accept applications until March 1.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Vermont Agency of Transportation has planned road work projects for this week that will install drainage, improve interchanges, and rehabilitate bridges on highways such as I-89, I-91, and U.S. 5 starting today and continuing through the week. Motorists should expect lane reductions and delays as flaggers and signage direct alternating traffic (notably in Colchester, Fairlee, and Williston) and plan extra travel time or alternate routes.  VermontBiz

HEALTH NEWS

  • Umbrella has expanded its Spark phone line statewide to help people who have caused harm in relationships and connect them with mental health, substance use, or domestic accountability programs—operating daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. In its first year in the Northeast Kingdom, the line received about 50 calls and now aims to offer support throughout Vermont.  Vermont Public

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Charlie Nardozzi answered late-fall gardening questions from locals on keeping Boston ferns healthy indoors, managing compost with jumping worms, and protecting crops like asparagus from voles—he advised planting peony roots immediately with proper depth and insulation.
