Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Burlington couple Raymond Whitney and Elise Charron-Whitney donated their 40-foot tree for the Church Street tree lighting ceremony as crews cut it down Friday morning and loaded it for transport downtown. The tree, grown from a root-ball purchased in South Hero decades ago, will be displayed ahead of the Nov. 28 ceremony and is meant to honor Alzheimer’s awareness.  NBC5
  • Vermont communities are offering free Thanksgiving meals on November 27 and nearby days through venues like sit-down restaurants and takeout services initiated by local groups—food shelves and nonprofits also provide baskets for those in need. Some events require reservations while others welcome walk-ins to ensure all residents have a meal.  Vermont Public
  • Over 100 local artists are showing work at the Annual Holiday Craft Show in South Burlington, where donations are collected to help the Champlain Islands Food Shelf (supporting Grand Isle County residents after a 44-day government shutdown). The event is held at the Double Tree Hotel on Williston Road and runs until Sunday at 4 p.m. (donations include non-perishable foods and cash).  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VTDigger will host a free virtual webinar on December 2 at noon to explain how Act 73 is changing Vermont's education system with reporter Corey McDonald—readers' pre-submitted questions will help shape the conversation led by moderator Libbie Sparadeo.  VTDigger
  • Vermont’s Redistricting Task Force approved a slow plan for changing schools at a final meeting Thursday that recommends making five shared education service groups to save money — not by creating larger school districts. The 11-member group listened to over 5,000 local voices and will send its revised report to the legislature on December 1.  Seven Days

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study led by UVM researchers and the Vermont Center for Ecostudies found nine new bee species in Vermont after a 10-year project that analyzed 80,000 bee reports. The research shows Vermont now has 352 bee species—more than any other northern New England state—and about 60% may need conservation help.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State attorneys general, including Vermont’s Charity Clark, are challenging new USDA guidance that will cause 22 refugee families with green cards to lose food benefits by Dec. 1 due to a five-year waiting period. The state Refugee Office will offer temporary grants of about $108,000 to help vulnerable households—though the assistance will not fully meet the need.  VTDigger

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Leapfrog study from last fall showed Vermont hospital safety grades, with Northwestern Medical Center (in Saint Albans) earning a B while the University of Vermont Medical Center (in Burlington) received a D and Central Vermont Medical Center (in Berlin) earned an F because of high infection rates and other safety issues. UVM Health said it is taking steps to improve care quality.  Burlington Free Press
  • An audit found that Vermont’s Department of Health did not answer over a third of nearly 1,100 food and lodging complaints between 2022 and 2024—some serious cases were not addressed in time and two critical allegations were not investigated. The department is now implementing eight recommendations to improve its oversight and track corrective actions more effectively.  NBC5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Families continue their holiday tradition as Vermont law lets residents cut a Christmas tree from public lands with a $5 permit at the Green Mountain National Forest. Permits (allowing up to two trees per household) are available online from Nov 1 through Dec 31, and trees must not exceed 20 feet in height with a stump of 6 inches or less.  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont Public has released a local gift guide that lists Vermont-made items so shoppers can finish their holiday lists without leaving the state. The guide also mentions a Vermont Edition gift show on Dec. 3—an event that will connect local makers with buyers.  Vermont Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • On November 21, UVM women's hockey lost 4-0 to Connecticut. Today the women's team plays Connecticut at 2 p.m. and the men's team hosts Harvard at 6 p.m.—and on November 23 the men's soccer team faces Hofstra at 1 p.m. while the women's basketball team travels to Washington at 5 p.m.  Burlington Free Press
  • The Vermont Catamounts will host Hofstra Pride in the second round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament at Virtue Field—rematching after a 2-1 win earlier in the season. The game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. and will decide which team advances in the tournament.  NBC5
