Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vermont’s Wheels for Warmth program raised $115,000 to help residents heat their homes by selling donated tires inspected by state officials and using all proceeds for emergency fuel assistance. The record-raising drive marks the highest total since the program began in 2005.  Burlington Free Press
  • Today a South Burlington family will match all donations to VTDigger’s Thanksgiving Drive—doubling support for local journalism and sending three meals with each gift to the Vermont Foodbank. Only two days remain to hit the goal of 3,600 meals, with 366 more donors needed.  VTDigger

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mad River Glen officials in Waitsfield are planning to raise $5 million for two projects—reconstructing Stark's Pub and purchasing 1,100 acres for $2.5 million—to expand the ski area. They need community donations to outbid a competing offer and complete the purchase by Jan 15.  NBC5
  • Vermont cannabis dispensary owners say the proposed regulation that assigns points based on THC levels is confusing and may hurt rural and elderly customers—critics worry it will push buyers to the illegal market. The Cannabis Control Board said it delayed the rule’s January 10 start to gather feedback and may adjust the policy before it goes into effect.  Seven Days

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bag O' Chips Productions' annual 'Night Before Christmas' play will return to Church Street Marketplace on November 28th at 5:30 p.m. + the event will lead into the tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., offering a festive experience for families, organizers said.  NBC5
  • At Vermont Forest Cemetery above Roxbury village, family members and volunteers held a natural burial on Oct 10 that returned a loved one to nature using simple tools and a biodegradable shroud. The ceremony follows Vermont’s legal change to allow shallower graves—promoting natural decomposition—and marks a growing regional interest in rewilding burial practices.  VTDigger

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from the University of Vermont and partner institutions will launch a multi-year study this spring to examine drug use and barriers to treatment in New England. The study will follow 1,200 people with substance use disorder over up to five years in Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island—focusing on programs for HIV and hepatitis C prevention, needle exchanges, and overdose prevention centers.  Vermont Public
  • Researchers at the University of Vermont published a study showing that a new blood test detected markers of cognitive decline more than 10 years before dementia symptoms, using blood samples from participants followed for over 20 years. Dr. Mary Cushman said the research — which focused on early detection — indicates that monitoring blood pressure and staying active may help lower risk.  NBC5
