Good morning, Burlington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 3rd of December.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vermont music icon Jon Gailmor, known for helping children create songs in local schools, died on November 30 in New Orleans at age 77. His son said a celebration of his life is planned for late May in Burlington — a fitting tribute to a man who earned several state honors and touched many lives.  Burlington Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burlington School District said its new high school on North Avenue is on schedule to open next fall—reporting it now needs $159 million instead of the $165 million bond approved by voters, while students have been using the former Macy's building since the previous facility was closed for cleanup.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Women and Our Woods Vermont is a network that brings women landowners together to share conservation ideas and offer support in managing woodlands. The group hosts 15—20 events yearly across Vermont that let both seasoned stewards and newcomers learn and connect.  Vermont Public
  • Scientists at UVM found that nitrogen fuels harmful cyanobacteria blooms in Vermont lakes, adding to the role of excess phosphorus. The study took weekly water samples from St Albans Bay and Missisquoi Bay, and researchers noted that Missisquoi Bay had double the nitrogen levels while they plan to sample four sites along Lake Champlain next year.  Vermont Public
  • A coastal storm brought 4 to 8 inches of snow to central and southern Vermont and 2 to 4 inches to the Champlain Valley on Tuesday—schools closed, roads turned slick, and some areas experienced power outages. Commuters faced delays as the winter weather disrupted travel and the snow tapered off Tuesday night.  NBC5
  • A video taken by Joe Genest in Addison County showed a Vermont bobcat silently stalking and pouncing on a squirrel—an unusual sight given the animal's shy nature. Vermont Fish and Wildlife furbearer Brehan Furfey said the elusive wildcat will need to hunt frequently during the winter to secure enough food.  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new report on Vermont's housing shortage for adults with developmental disabilities shows that more than $60 million is needed over the next five years to create at least 600 new supportive living units, as aging parents can no longer care for their adult children. Lawmakers and advocates are urging updated funding and housing rules to ease these challenges—one state senator plans to introduce legislation in January.  Vermont Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • Midwives who worked at the closed Copley Hospital are fundraising to open Vermont's first freestanding birth center, *Green Mountain Birth Center*, in Waterbury by 2027. The center will offer a safe option for low-risk births while still depending on hospital transfers for emergencies following recent law changes.  Vermont Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • NBC5 invites local viewers to vote on which winter sports team they are most excited to see return, including the Burlington Seahorses, Peru girls basketball, Sealakers girls hockey and Beekmantown boys hockey. Voting will close at 8p on December 4— the winner will be announced during the 11p newscast.  NBC5
