COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alex and his wife, with their 10-year-old son, moved to Burlington in June after leaving New York for safety from violence in Ecuador. He works as a cook at local institutions while his son attends Edmunds, and they join other Ecuadorian residents seeking a more secure future amid asylum policies.  Vermont Public

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comedian Nick Offerman, known for his role on Parks and Recreation, will perform his woodworking and comedy show Big Woodchuck at The Flynn Center on Sunday, Apr. 19 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale to Flynn members today and to the public on Dec. 12.  NBC5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Winooski School District removed its website on Tuesday after a Somali flag raising video drew heavy online traffic, prompting officials to restrict public access. The flag, raised to support the community following controversial remarks last week, will remain on campus until the end of the week.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Burlington warned that today will bring light snow with one to two inches locally and accumulation statewide may reach up to five inches, while additional snow is forecasted Thursday night into Friday near Mt. Mansfield to Jay Peak.  Burlington Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Shoreham artist transforms grief into support by hand-carving red cardinals in honor of his late wife and donates all proceeds to UVM Cancer Center for glioblastoma research. Friends and neighbors help sand and paint the cardinals (a comforting symbol for many families), continuing a heartfelt community effort.  NBC5
  • Officials detected bird flu in a backyard poultry flock in Orleans County after its first bird death on Nov. 29. The flock was quarantined and depopulated and is in a 10-km control zone with poultry movement restricted with permits until Dec. 19 (risk to public health is low).  Burlington Free Press
  • Vermont officials warned residents in a Tuesday press conference that rising premiums, reduced subsidies and Medicare Advantage exits are complicating insurance enrollment, urging Vermont Health Connect users to enroll by Dec. 15 (for Jan. 1 coverage) and advising those losing Medicare Advantage plans to act early to use special protections.  NBC5
  • The Vermont Dept. of Mental Health is offering free online training for mental health providers starting in January in a partnership with the Legislature and the Department of Liquor and Lottery to certify counselors so they can better serve 11,000 Vermonters struggling with gambling.  NBC5

  • Local Vermont skiers are preparing to watch top athletes compete in the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February as they face rigorous training routines plus former champion Lisa Wilcox Galotti recalled training six days a week, with programs like Woodstock Ski Runners at Saskadena Six coaching 400 young athletes.  NBC5
  • Officials stepping down have left a shortage in Vermont high schools — forcing game postponements and extra travel for remaining referees. The Principals’ Association is reaching out to college students and school administrators to fill spots and keep sports events on schedule.  VTDigger
