- ➤ The Lakeside Skating Rink opened on Wednesday, its earliest start in 15 years, and offers neighborhood skating for all. Burlington Public Works Director Chapin Spencer lends over 100 free skate pairs from his porch while the rink is open daily (until 10 p.m.). NBC5
- ➤ Burlington businesses and organizations are handing out free winter gear and hot meals during freezing weather. Only Cannoli owner Sarah Howley and Jason Fitzgerald’s Sock Out, Cold Feet drive plan to help hundreds by distributing gear and meals throughout December (over 2,000 socks planned) in Chittenden County. - ➤ Today the Vermont Federal Foundation is hosting a raffle to raise $60,000 that will fund the Vermont Foodbank, its nonprofit foundation, and one raffle winner. Tickets cost $20 each (3,000 available) and proceeds support local food shelves (aiding families in need) across the community. Burlington Free Press

- ➤ Winooski School District Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria said there was no threat to students after hateful messages followed a Somali flag raising on campus in recent days. He noted that law enforcement is reviewing hundreds of messages, and the flag will remain until the end of the week—despite delayed communication with families. NBC5
- ➤ UVM’s new president Marlene Tromp has built strong community ties since arriving in July by engaging students, faculty and staff—she hosted a Halloween event that highlighted her approachable leadership (a promising start). Seven Days

- ➤ On Dec. 3, 23 people from 16 nations were sworn in as U.S. citizens in a Burlington courthouse (marking their new beginning) amid tighter immigration rules that halted other ceremonies. They also registered to vote, cementing their commitment to the community. Seven Days

- ➤ Generator Makerspace hosts a two-day sewing workshop to create shower bags for breast cancer patients recovering from surgery, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 13 and 14 at 40 Sears Lane; community members may donate materials (cotton fabric, thread, ribbon, and needles) and join the project.
