  • Milton residents can join a holiday tree hunt as Chris Taylor continues a tradition begun ten years ago by posting a secret location for a Christmas tree that invites neighbors to add an ornament, with any unadorned ornaments later donated to the Milton Family Community Center.  NBC5
  • Burlington park ranger Neil Preston provided Seven Days with a tip about David (a homeless resident in his 60s) living in Calahan Park's dugouts. After earlier reports on David's struggles, the two reconnected for lunch, marking a positive local encounter.  Seven Days

  • Bishop John McDermott spoke at Christmas Eve Mass yesterday — urging parishioners to slow down amid the holiday bustle and embrace Christ's message of peace in their homes and community.  NBC5

  • Education Secretary Zoie Saunders was interviewed on Dec. 24 in the Statehouse cafeteria while reporter Alison Novak pressed for more background details.   • 95-year-old UVM volunteer Hilda White, who has mounted over 50,000 specimens in 28 years, had a new Christmas fern species, +Polystichum hildae+, named after her by herbarium director Weston Testos after its discovery in Colombia in 2023.  Burlington Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NBC5 meteorologists reviewed snowfall reports from Tuesday, Dec. 23 and found Vermont counties recorded up to 8 inches while nearby New York areas had lower totals. Residents can use the data to plan for travel today.  NBC5
  • A Milton funeral home now offers water cremation, a greener option that uses alkaline hydrolysis (a process combining water, chemicals, heat, and pressure) to break down a body. Owner Jonathan Duponte said the service meets local demand even as it uses more electricity than flame cremation.  Burlington Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will open a low-barrier extreme cold weather shelter today at the Robert Miller Community & Recreation Center at 130 Gosse Court, available from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. tomorrow. Transportation is provided (starting at 4:30 p.m.) from designated sites, and the shelter accepts adults and pets.  Burlington Free Press
