CULTURE NEWS

  • Vermont Public Morning Edition host Jenn Jarecki and NPR’s Leila Fadel compared notes on live storytelling during a recent conversation after Fadel visited Vermont in April.   • Burlington City Arts will celebrate Highlight Festival today from noon until 12:30 a.m. at venues spanning Church Street to the Waterfront, with live performances, Circus Smirkus shows, improv comedy, fireworks at 8 p.m., and a New Year’s dance at the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain.  NBC5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A long-term study shows Mount Mansfield's snow season has shortened by nearly three weeks since 1965, with snowfall appearing later in fall and melting by early spring. UVM researchers say the trend of warming winters may raise risks of mid-winter flooding and summer drought.  VTDigger
  • Tonight after sunset, a fast-moving clipper and lake-effect snow will drop a couple inches across high elevations and mountain spines, making travel conditions slick. Roadways could remain slippery into early Thursday morning as snowfall tapers (minor accumulations expected).  NBC5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, 43 new citizens from 24 nations took their oaths at the Federal Courthouse in Burlington—cheered on by family and welcomed by local leaders, including Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas and Rep. Balint, who acknowledged their hard work.  NBC5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vermont will receive over $195 million each year for five years from the Rural Health Transformation Fund to improve rural healthcare affordability and access. Gov. Phil Scott said the funding will boost virtual health options & workforce development, while restrictions bar spending on building projects.  Vermont Public
  • Vermont is set to receive $195 million from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid as part of the Rural Health Transformation program. The Agency of Human Services will use the one-time grant to hire staff, expand telehealth, and boost workforce training for rural hospitals.  VTDigger
  • State officials have used $38 million in Medicaid dollars over the past five years to keep nursing homes open amid declining beds and high staffing costs. Lawmakers now request detailed reports on the bailout program to ensure the emergency funds remain a temporary measure.  VTDigger

SPORTS NEWS

  • This week, Sugarbush Resort in Warren opened 200 acres of slopes (after de-icing lifts Tuesday) amid cold, icy weather, and officials advise riders to lower difficulty levels to manage the ice.  NBC5
  • On Tuesday, Dec. 30, Sawyer Judkins made 14-for-14 foul shots and scored 22 points to lead the Seahorses to a 60-50 win over CVU.  Burlington Free Press
  • Sinatra Robles, a 15-year-old luger from Castleton (a nearby town), will leave for Europe next week to train in Germany and compete in Continental Cup races in Latvia, aiming to join the U.S. Olympic team in 2034. He began racing at age nine and has quickly risen through the ranks.  NBC5
