UpkeepThe city, year-round

If you walk Williston Road over I-89, you know the stretch: traffic barreling on and off the ramps and, with winter's short, dark days around the corner, less visibility. After decades of that, walkers and bikers can now see a fix taking shape just south of the overpass.

The South Burlington Walk-Bike Bridge got a groundbreaking ceremony before construction began. Vermont Business Magazine ran a copy of the Community News Service report, which says phase one is underway.

  • Started: late July, after a groundbreaking ceremony
  • Phase one: underway now
  • Safety: nighttime illumination, among numerous features

2028when the South Burlington Walk-Bike Bridge is to be completed

Construction began in late July, and the city will maintain the bridge year-round once it's done.

PlanBTV2050

People came to Burlington High School on Thursday to help shape PlanBTV2050, the city's plan for how Burlington changes over the next few decades, which aims to add recreation, safer infrastructure for cyclists, and reach a 7,000-unit housing goal. Where those units would go is "one of the key questions we're asking tonight," Planning Director Charles Dillard said. WPTZ

Clean Sweep

Operation Clean Sweep is underway in Burlington, and Public Works Director Chapin Spencer says the city typically collects around 800 yards of leaves and organic matter, nearly 100 dump truck loads. That keeps phosphorus out of Lake Champlain, which fuels cyanobacteria blooms in the warmer seasons. WPTZ

Winooski

The Sugar House Hotel off Abenaki Way is officially accepting visitors and advertises itself as Marriott's first 100 percent sustainable hotel in the world, and Manager Arnold Vainqueur points to rooftop solar panels and geothermal heat pumps. You don't need to be staying at the hotel to go to the Treetops rooftop restaurant, and reservations are recommended. MyChamplainValley.com

UVM women's basketball beat Quinnipiac 76-66 Thursday night at Patrick Gym, sinking a program-record 17 three-pointers. Emma Haan hit six of them on the way to a career-high 23 points, and Cat Gilwee added 17. It's the second program record in a week, and the Catamounts play at Fairfield on Sunday. Burn permits

Crews went to Hand Road in Ferrisburgh on Wednesday night, where an unpermitted burn spread into a brush fire and ignited a nearby garage, and firefighters knocked it down quickly. Officials say dry conditions mean any fire can spread rapidly, and anything other than a campfire requires a burn permit. WCAX

The Wrap

Somewhere around Burlington, a 30-to-35-foot Blue Spruce is waiting to become the top-block star of Church Street. The Marketplace is still searching for its 2026 Holiday Tree and has looked at about 20 trees so far. Williston, Winooski, Colchester, Burlington and Essex Junction all count. Check your yard. Maybe your spruce has big dreams.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The UVM women’s hoops team shot the lights out Thursday night at Patrick Gym, downing Quinnipiac 76-66 behind a program-record 17 three pointers. Emma Haan led the way with six of those triples and a career high 23 points, while Cat Gilwee added 17, and Sienna Papanastasiou-Thomas chipped in 12 as well. “I mean, we’re really fortunate to have a ton of shooters,” Haan said after the game. “And I think our coaches and each other have instilled a ton of confidence in us to just let the shot fly when we’re open. And when that’s not hitting, we have inside presence too. So
